The five press reports I've read about the new General Accountability Office study ignore the GAO's numerous recommendations to cut targeted tax benefits and to reduce tax evasion by increasing IRS enforcement. The study is being portrayed as a clarion call for cutting wasteful government spending. Yes, it is that. But it is more. It is a call for tax reform and elimination of wasteful spending throughout the tax code. It is sad that Republicans are ignoring this because some of these proposals entail increasing revenue. It is perhaps even sadder that the "mainstream media" has missed the point too. Read here, here, here, here, and here.
